General David Humphreys

external image 350px-HumphreysDavidEngraving.gifIn 1752, General David Humphreys was born in Derby, Connecticut(1).

His parents were Reverend Daniel Humphreys and Sarah Riggs Bowers Humphreys. General David Humphreys was one of the soldiers to represent the state of Connecticut in the American Revolution War. David Humphreys went to Yale University. He taught at a school in Wethersfield, Connecticut. Then became a tutor in New York in 1773 to 1776 (3).

In 1776 he enter the Revolutionary War. Humphreys was appointed by the Congress as a secretary of the committee in 1784. In 1786, he was back in Connecticut as a member of the State’s General Assembly. In 1791-1797, he was a minister to Lisbon. In 1802, he minister to Madrid (4).

He spends time with the Washington's at their Mount Vernon where he was a trusted advisor and confidant of President Washington(6). In 1797, David Humphreys married Ann Francis Bulkeley. (8)

He was commissioned a brigadier general in the Connecticut militia in reaction to the War of 1812(5).

David Humphreys had alot of honors from being in the war and the education(7).

Alot of people respected him and his family. General David Humphreys was a man who believed in the ideals of freedom. David Humphreys died in New Haven in 1818.(9)
